Runaway Bay - Jamaica

We need your Trip Reports for Breezes, Runaway Bay.

Dan - May 2007
We really enjoyed Breezes Runaway Bay. We were there 7 nights. The weather wasn't great but after a couple of drinks, who cares?

The airport transfer and bus to the resort was trouble free. The bus was full so the check in process went a little slow but that is understandable. Our room was just as promised, a huge 2 room suite with a plunge pool. We were right over the small swimming pool with a great view of the ocean. This pool is a long walk to the nearest bar and there is no wait staff. That's probably why this pool doesn't seem to be used much.

Service to our room was very good. We did have a small problem getting our in-room refrigerator stocked with the sodas and beer we preferred but it was a minor inconvenience. The bathroom was very spacious and the shower was great fun for 2.

We participated in just about everything the resort offers and enjoyed them all. For divers, I would recommend the night dive. It is an extra charge but well worth it.

All of the restaurants are very good. For dinner, we really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant the best. Go to www.youtube.com and search for sake bomb for a sample of fun from one of our nights there. We also enjoyed the open air restaurant for dinner but unfortunately, because of the weather, it was only open 2 of our 7 nights. We found all of the wait staff to be friendly and provided excellent service.

One thing that surprised us on this trip was the openness of providing gratuities to the staff. We have visited other Superclubs and have never seen this before. In only one case did a staff member decline a tip saying it was resort policy. We certainly don't have any problem rewarding superior service but Superclubs makes a big deal of their no gratuity policy.

Overall, we were very happy with the resort and hope to go back.

My trip to Breezes at Runaway Bay went very well. I had requested a room in the building closest to the nude beach and they gave me a room in that building and it was only 3 rooms from the waterfront end. I was very happy with that. The resort was as I had expected and there were anywhere from 10-16 nude beach people at a time. One of the ladies organized a nude booze cruise for the nude beach people so we had a nice afternoon on the catermeran with 16 nude people. The food was about what you would expect, good but not great. The golf was fun but the course is not manicured to american standards but knowing this ahead of time I was very happy with the golf course. Overall, it was a very relaxing and friendly place. This was the third time I have stayed at this resort and my 10th time in Jamaica.

It's October and are celebrating a half-way to Jamaica party. Stayed at Breezes, had a great time...met a lot of great people. Everyone was so friendly. Completly forgot about the daily grind. The resort and staff made you feel like there was nothing to worry about. Didn't wear shoes for almost the whole week. Upon arrival, we were seperated at the airport for a bit and the SuperClubs staff were great. We got a cab and just over an hour later we got to the resort. We settled in the room, and then met Delroy...fantastic drinks, and kept them filled to the point we had about 3 more than we were planning on before dinner.

Buffet was OK. Stick to the Starlight Grill and Martino's for dinner. Beach Grill was cooked to order food with really friendly service and open the whole day. Rooms may not be this resorts selling point, but you won't see alot of it. It was nice enough, a LOT of room, cd player, etc. Lived in t-shirts and bathing suits (when we had to...). Packed WAY too ! much. Seriously, pack for this and take half of it out. I read some bad reports on the pool, couldn't have been better. Always populated, but never crowded. OUR bartender was really good (we had 3, but one stood out, thanks Roary).

Other than excursions, you could do this trip with $20 and have a great time. FREE tennis lessons! In short (and I hate to even say it) No problems Mon! (and they ain't kidding, your only responsiblity is getting to dinner) FOR A WHOLE WEEK!

We did not book this resort but rather were stuck there on a super surprise plus. We were told that the property was nice and comparable to Hedo 3 which we have stayed a few times. We found out fast that this was not true and due to a busy time we could not be moved anywhere. The clothing optional side the beach is nice. The bar almost never had ice or glasses, and was taken down at 5:00 each evening. Towels were hard to find and the hot tub was tiny and we had to use it in shifts.

This along with the fact the FDR next door has lots of lookers and picture takers makes the nude side pretty uncomfortable. They also let guest from FDR walk across the beach with children and use the nude beach to swim. The rooms are outdated and musty, the couches and bedspreads are all mildew. In short the rooms are damp and an allergy suffers nightmare.

The average age when we were there was very young honeymooners and the rest were in their golden years. The property has no atmosphere, and is ultra conservative. Food was OK at best, service was slow and understaffed. Think twice before booking this property.

Editors Note: At Castaways Travel we believe in posting all points of view... positive and negative.

Paula and Ed make some good points here... Breezes, Runaway Bay is definitely on the budget end of the SuperClubs spectrum and does NOT have the amenities of the GL's or the Hedo's. Our experience indicates that SuperClubs likes to place their "Super Surprise" guests in one of the nicer of their properties... space permitting. But these guests found out that it can't happen if the higher priced resorts are at, or very near capacity.

We find that the younger crowd, a lot of first timers to Jamaica, and for those that a nude beach isn't the priority, give this resort higher marks... but if you have been to a GL or Hedo... its hard to step down.

Thanks for your remarks Paula and Ed.
