 Montego Bay - Jamaica |

Here is our first trip report on the
Sunset Waters Resort |
| M&R - February 2008 |
 |
We just returned from our 10 day trip to Sunset Beach --
they have undergone many changes from what we understand since this was our
first trip to Sunset. They're still trying to complete the renovation - we were
unable to get a room in the Inn even though we requested it and had a Tower
room for 5 nights-after not having hot water for a day and then not having any
water for a day, we demanded to have a room switched to The Inn. They did
accommodate us - the room in the Inn was superior to the Towers. We met some
great staff people that made our visit enjoyable. The meals were a little
lacklustre - in that there was not much variety in their buffet and the only
place where the food was actually hot was in the Asian restaurant. The Italian
restaurant was okay except nothing was hot - the soup was luke warm. The nude
beach now has metal wall screening it and it has been moved further down the
beach from the resort-they need to do a lot of work to clean it up -- it was
very rocky, we even found pieces of glass on the beach. It's difficult to go
out into the water due to the rocky bottom. Many of the people we talked to
were angry about how they screened the beach - because it really did seem
unnecessary due to the natural terrain. At this point we will be looking for
somewhere else to go. |

We spent a wonderful week at Sunset Beach
in February 2002. This was our first trip to Jamaica and didn't know what to
expect. The bus ride from the airport is only 10 minutes, the driver took us
through town and pointed out points of interest along the way. This resort is
on a peninsula and has a private beach so you are not bothered by anyone
selling anything. The beach is very long, we thought it was very nice. There is
good snorkeling right off the shore, lots to see for the inexperienced (like
us!). The section of beach beyond the pool/poolbar was mostly families, further
down was more topless/adult, and at the very end was the nude beach. We were
told this was a protected reef area, there were lots of urchins so water shoes
are a good idea.
The nude beach had lots of chairs, palapas for shade.
There is a bar right before you get to the nude beach to get drinks, take along
a large thermal cup and they'll gladly fill it. There is a guard at the nude
beach to ensure your privacy and the beach "dead-ends" so there are no
"passthroughs". This was our first nude beach experience and it was wonderful.
We wish there would have been a shower to rinse off, maybe they'll add
that.
On our arrival, Andre, the general manager introduced himself,
gave us his card and asked us to contact him if we needed anything during our
stay. The first room we had was double beds and a bay view that we stayed in
one night. We found Andre the next morning, told him we'd prefer a king bed and
ocean view. He said he could not move us that day but would the next morning.
True to his word, we were moved to a room with a spectacular view and a king
bed. The rooms were very clean and adequate, cable TV. We did miss having a
minifridge and ceiling fan but we survived. Next time we would like to stay in
the two story Inn rooms located close to the nude beach. No clocks in the room.
There is a coin op laundry down by the pool changing area, get soap at the gift
shop and a token ($5) at the cashier for washing, dryer free.
The food
was ok, we always found something to eat. Chinese and Italian restaurants
require reservations, we did Chinese and found it to be the same as the regular
restaurant. Jerk Chicken at the Beach Grill was fantastic. Went out to dinner
once in Montego Bay. We did not have to leave the resort for anything, a few
days a week local artisans come to the hotel to display their
wares.
Great valve for the $, we went to Couples Negril in March, spent
a lot more and their nude beach wasn't as private as Sunset Beach.
